Alina Fund from GBG Unternehmensgruppe joined the Early Careers Programme to gain new experiences, meet peers from across Europe and see the EU institutions from the inside. Her time in Brussels offered valuable insights into EU decision-making, intercultural collaboration and the many career paths available in the European environment.

What motivated you to join the Early Careers Programme in Brussels?
“I wanted to gain new experiences, meet people from different countries, and exchange ideas with them. I was also really curious to discover Brussels and explore the main European institutions. What motivated me most was understanding how Europe actually works and how people from different backgrounds collaborate within the EU.”.
What was the highlight of your experience?
“The highlight for me was definitely visiting the European Parliament and the European Council. It was fascinating to get a look behind the scenes and gain exclusive insights into how these institutions operate. I also really enjoyed the city tour and the beer tasting – it was a great way to connect with the group and brought everyone closer together.”
What did you learn about how the EU works that you didn’t know before?
“I learned how essential Brussels is for the European Union and how the institutional processes actually work in detail. It was really interesting to see how many different levels and actors are involved in decision-making and how closely everything is connected.”
How did visiting the institutions and meeting professionals here change your perspective on Europe or your career path?
“Visiting the institutions and meeting professionals showed me how much effort and dedication go into shaping European policy. I now see Europe in a completely new way – as something dynamic, alive, and full of opportunities. It also made me realise that there are many interesting career paths within the European context that I hadn’t considered before.”
What’s one thing you’ll take away from this programme, personally or professionally?
“I’m taking away a much better understanding of intercultural collaboration. The exchange with other participants showed me how enriching different perspectives can be. I also improved my English a lot during the programme – after a few days, I was really in the flow and felt much more confident speaking. Personally, I gained self-confidence and realised that I truly enjoy working in an international environment.”
Finally, what would you say to future participants who are thinking about joining the programme?
“I would say: go for it! It’s an amazing opportunity to experience Brussels and the EU institutions up close, to meet inspiring people, and to grow both personally and professionally. The programme is intense, but it’s absolutely worth it in every way.”
