Stockholmhusen is a collaborative project in Stockholm between Familjebostäder, Stockholmshem and Svenska Bostäder. The aim is to build thousands of affordable rental homes in a reduced time, while respecting both sustainability principles and architectural tradition. The project is an excellent example of what can be achieved when different organisations work together.
Building sustainable housing, faster
Stockholmhusen is one of the city’s largest development projects to address the housing shortage. The goal is to save time and reduce costs by repeating the design, building in series, and working with overlapping processes. It plans to deliver 3,500 homes by 2026, and 1040 are already completed.

One of the key aspects of the project is its fast and efficient construction times. Through parallel working and strong coordination between all stakeholders, the time to complete a house has been reduced from an average of 8 to 4 years. The stakeholders have developed a joint procurement model and robust collaboration with contractors to streamline production.
Due to these improved processes and the serial production of homes in large volumes, costs can be significantly reduced over time. The developed homes can therefore be rented at 20% lower costs to the tenant than similar projects.
Innovation while respecting architectural tradition
All the homes are built according to a design protocol which ensures that they maintain similar features wherever they are built in the city. However, specific attention has been given to ensuring that the homes – while being modern and easy to replicate – are also in keeping with architectural tradition.
The houses can be built in combinations of slatted houses and point houses, as well as in block buildings. Design features include wood-clad entrances with benches, window surrounds with relief in the plaster and door handles designed by artists. It is this attention to detail which ensures that the new constructions are successfully incorporated into the fabric of the neighbourhood.

High environmental standards
The homes are built to the standard of Miljöbyggnad silver – which is a label to categorise the level of sustainability of buildings in Sweden. As well as an efficient energy supply and solar panels on certain buildings, elements such as green roofs and sustainable mobility through bike and car pools have also been introduced.
Award-winning project
The project won the European Responsible Housing Award 2025 for ‘Management excellence for housing affordability’. The award was presented at the International Social Housing Festival in Dublin, Ireland.
