The next Sustainable Construction Topic Group meeting will be held in Valencia, Spain, in collaboration with the Valencia Institute for Building (IVE). We will explore climate adaptation and energy analysis, including study visits and interactive workshops.
Climate adaptation strategies
With the Valencia Institute for Building, we will discuss a range of climate adaptation strategies. These will include heat wave mitigation and guidelines to improve a building’s flood resilience. In addition, we will discuss technical protocols for the inspection and evaluation of buildings affected by natural hazards. Participants will take part in a World Cafe Workshop on the topic, encouraging collaborative working.
IVE will also present the BARRIO project, which provides a digital tool to match the needs for interventions on clusters of buildings with aggregated offers of services and solutions.
The discussions will be complemented by study visits on the topic.

Engineering solutions for climate adaptation
Topic Group Coordinator Isaac Scaramella will introduce a number of case studies where climate change adaptation was considered a key factor in both new construction and renovation.
Participants will also work in small groups as part of the Flying Experts Workshop. During the workshop, each group will develop a climate adaptation strategy based on architectural plans. Sharing each group’s proposal will help to compare and contrast the approaches from different countries and areas of expertise.
Energy design strategies
We are pleased to welcome Thilo Cunz from DENA (German Energy Agency), who will present how energy design strategies are developed across EU and non-EU countries. Following the lecture, participants will present on their country-specific energy design strategies, before starting a collaborative workshop.
